Residents marvel in beauty, improvements in Washington

Letter to the Editor:

While riding in the car recently, we were commenting on all the positive activities and progress taking place in our town, Washington, Iowa. We’re so fortunate to live here with its progressive spirit, its desire to make our community even better and its wonderful people (adults and kids) who care.

Some of the recent activities we could think of were the Middle School Orange/Black Give Back Days, kids learning to volunteer, and its delightful Talent Show. Then there was the moving, patriotic Memorial Day Ceremony and all the flags waving in Elm Grove Cemetery. And the annual Downtown Clean-up made such an improvement to the appearance of the downtown, thanks to its dedicated volunteers. Recently we enjoyed the very fun and hugely successful Summer Classic and all the energy it brought to our community. Lastly, we just completed a WHS and local cemetery tree planting project with over thirty, great high school students and some other wonderful community volunteers. Adults and kids care about Washington and are committed to giving of their time and talents to make it even better! There may be other events you can think of?

Additionally, there’s the work on the new fire station and then there will be the improvements to City Hall and the police station. The new condos by Fareway are so attractive. There’s been groundbreaking on the new “Y” and the new Wellness Park is happening. Also, there are exciting improvements to some of the downtown store fronts. Having recently attended the KCTC Alive after 5:00 in the new Business Park, we were thrilled to see the new buildings in that area and more activity is to come at that site. What projects do you have to add?

Just days ago we took grandchildren to a movie in our fabulous movie theater and afterwards we went and looked at our special Centennial fountain with its colored lights and beautiful water displays – how pretty!

We have much to be thankful for here in our hometown, Washington, Iowa.
