KALONA — With the voluntary annexation of a portion of the Shiloh property still on the table, the Kalona City Council is beginning to look into possible layout and options for bringing in partners to occupy the 90,000 square foot building on site.
At their meeting on Monday, May 20, Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh announced Carl A. Nelson & Company would be on site next Tuesday, May 28, to look at the floor plan and perform code review on the space to ensure any changes the city wishes to make would be compliant. Previously, the city has held public meetings at Shiloh looking for input on layout and design for the space, and were met with with a positive response. RDG Planning & Design also will visit the property next week to take those wishes into consideration and draw up a possible layout that will best service the space.
Carl A. Nelson & Company also will help determine the financial effects of operating the property. Schlabaugh said he is hoping to get averages for maintaining a building of that size as well as the cost of ongoing maintenance.
“We just want a second set of eyes on that,” he said of bringing in a new company.
Schlabaugh said the city still is working to engage partners for the project, including: Washington County Conservation, Washington County Board of Supervisors, Washington County Public Health, Washington County Emergency Management, HACAP, Mid-Prairie Community School District, the YMCA and miscellaneous private entities who work with public entities.
He explained the private entities were companies who provided work to the general public and said they have to engage private entities with no private focus.
“That may come, it may not, but we haven’t actively gone out and solicited that to this point,” he said.
No agreements have been made and the listed entities are for discussion purposes only, he said. Schlabaugh said they will give both companies time to process the information and come up with a potential plan then reconvene the first week of June.
