Fewer people dying, more hospitalized with COVID

WASHINGTON — Washington has not had any more deaths due to COVID-19 since early summer, but hospitalizations have increased in recent weeks.

At the Washington County Board of Health meeting Thursday, Public Health Director Danielle Pettit-Majewski gave an update on the COVID-19 numbers in the county.

As of Thursday morning, there were 5,891 individuals tested and 582 positive cases, just under a 10 percent rate of positive cases.

There are 92 patients hospitalized, which Pettit-Majewski said follows the statewide increase.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Iowa are up from 353 to 376 as of Tuesday at 11 a.m., the highest total here since May 28, according to data analyzed by The Gazette.

Washington County currently has 28 patients in the intensive care unit and 12 patients on ventilators. Deaths remain at 11.
