LIBERTYVILLE – Fire destroyed a home in Libertyville Thursday night. Fortunately no injuries were reported.
The home was in the 2700 block of Indigo Boulevard, and was inhabited by Lucas McCoy and his family. The Jefferson County Law Center received a 9-1-1 call at about 7 p.m. alerting authorities to a fire. The Libertyville Fire Department arrived on scene 11 minutes later, and by that time, the house was fully engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Libertyville Fire Chief Gerrad Goodrich said firefighters learned on their way to the fire that nobody was at home, and thus firefighters did not try to enter the structure.
“There was no way any firefighter was going to enter the house,” said Goodrich, remarking on how far along the fire was at that time. The house collapsed after only about 20-25 minutes.
Fire departments in Fairfield and Batavia were called immediately, and later Birmingham Fire Department was called to assist. Goodrich said his firefighters remained on scene until midnight, and returned throughout the night and into the Friday morning until about noon to put out hot spots. About 30 firefighters responded to the blaze.
Goodrich said it was a windy day, and that made fighting the fire especially tough because the wind helped the fire spread.
The American Red Cross has been called to assist the family. Goodrich said he understands that the family is staying with friends and relatives in the area.
