High demand brings WCHC test changes

Washington County Hospital and Clinics recently announced changes to its wellness testing program.

Local testing capacity and volumes of patients tested for COVID-19 have increased every week since WCHC began testing in March. This trend is expected to continue.

Priority testing is reserved for patients who are symptomatic and require a physician visit. Tests will be prioritized for those who show up ill at the emergency rooms, who are hospitalized and who are scheduled for surgery.

In addition to testing sick patients, WCHC provides the COVID-19 Wellness Testing program for individuals who are asymptomatic but are concerned with exposure or past exposure.

To ensure the safety of patients and healthcare workers and to accommodate all testing needs, WCHC now requires an appointment for individuals who would like a COVID-19 wellness test. The wellness testing program at WCHC provides individuals an opportunity to pay out-of-pocket for an antigen or antibody COVID-19 test. These tests are meant to ease the mind of individuals who do not have symptoms but are concerned of exposure.

WCHC can accommodate 18 wellness tests each day, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m. Cost of the COVID-19 wellness test is $125, due at time of service.

To schedule an appointment for a COVID-19 wellness test call, 319-653-5481. If you are currently experiencing symptoms, you are encouraged to schedule an appointment with your primary care provider by calling 319-653-7291.

COVID-19 wellness test results will not be available to patients at the time of testing, and individuals will not be able to wait for results in accordance with social distancing practices in place at the hospital and clinics. All testing results will be posted to the individual’s secure patient portal and will be available within 24 hours.

Results will be reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health, and patients with positive results may be contacted by the local Public Health Department. After receiving test results, questions regarding precautions and guidance should be addressed by the local Public Health Department, 319-653-7758, Ext 3.
