KALONA — A beach party will take place in the City of Kalona on Saturday, June 15, as they kick off their annual summer festival, Kalona Days.
Beginning at 7:40 a.m., a 1-mile and 5K fun run will begin and be followed by a day full of family-friendly activities.
“I think after going through the winter, everyone just needs some sunshine,” said Kalona Chamber of Commerce Director Ben Curtis.
Curtis said Kalona Days is an annual event the town looks forward to every year. The day begins that morning with a fun run, followed by the parade to bring everyone together and various summer activities such as a pedal pull, pony rides and inflatables.
Live music will be played from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the estimated 300 guests who attend every year. There will be various food vendors and shops will be open for people to pop in and explore.
“There’s activities for all ages probably until dinnertime or so,” he said.
Area businesses and organizations like the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department will be participating with a “douse the house” simulation at 11:30 a.m., demonstrating how to put out fires. New this year, the chamber is partnering with the city of Kalona to provide even more entertainment and a larger variety of activities.
“Their partnership this year is really going to enhance the day overall for families,” he said.
Curtis said he is excited about the opportunity to open the community to people of all ages because he feels Kalona is a great place to live and work and by having a townwide celebration, more people get to celebrate along with them.
“We’re super fortunate for what the businesses in the area have contributed and it really goes to show the high level and the broad support that the businesses show for the chamber,” he said.
