RIVERSIDE — A new business in Riverside is aiming to appeal to the “geeks” of the community. Joseph Graff, owner of The Gilded Unicorn, said his new gaming store is meant to be a place for people of similar interest to come together and play games and bond over their common interests.

Graff, an artist by trade, moved to Riverside two years ago from the Chicago suburbs because he was looking to get into drawing landscapes. Being a fan of pop culture and video games, Graff soon connected with other like minded individuals and began meeting up regularly to play.

After living in the area for two years, he has decided to open a shop where video games, board games and any other type of game is available because to him, “Washington County is so underserved as far as geekery.”

The store, The Gilded Unicorn, is located at 12 1/2 West First Street in Riverside and is expected to open the end of January. Graff said it will be a place where people can come in and play games of all sorts and purchase games and consoles.

He plans to refurbish systems and have them available for purchase as well as the games to go with them. Graff said for those interested in video games, there is no local hangout or place people can go where they can be with people who share the same passion.

Connecting people is really the goal, he said. Graff said there will be no public wifi in the building because he wants people to connect with each other.

“I don’t deter people from coming here and playing games online but I happily am opening up table so that you’re kitchen table can stay having laundry on it. (That way) you can still go somewhere with a group of guys or a group of girls on a Friday night or a Saturday night,” he said.

Graff said he hopes people come with groups to enjoy the space, get to know other people and be themselves. He said he will have “the weirdest selection of stuff” for sale from accessories to apparel, all centered on gaming. Graff said creating a comfortable, family friendly atmosphere is the goal. He said whether an introvert or an extrovert, there is a place for everyone in his shop and he hopes people find a home there.

The Gilded Unicorn, located at 12 1/2 West First Street in Riverside will be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday-Monday. More information can be found on the shop Facebook page at: The Gilded Unicorn.
