Riverboat Foundation donating $250,000 to derecho relief fund

WASHINGTON — The Washington County Riverboat Foundation has donated $250,000 to match donations made by the Kehl Foundation and the Elite Casino Resorts of $125,000 each.

The final donation of $500,000 will go to disaster relief funding for communities affected by the derecho. Donations of $100,000 each will be sent to the American Red Cross of Eastern Iowa, United Way East Central Iowa, Salvation Army of Eastern Iowa, Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) and a grant process through the Washington County Riverboat Foundation during the 2020 Relief Grant cycle.

Patty Koller, executive director of the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, said, “We are fortunate to be able to donate $250,000 to help our communities during this time. The temporary closure of our casino partner, Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, resulted in our board temporarily pausing all grants as we awaited the casino reopening. We have been cautiously monitoring our casino partner operations since reopening; however, the level of devastation to eastern Iowa as a result of this extraordinary storm necessitates immediate action to assist in the recovery.”

The Washington County Riverboat Foundation has awarded more than $46 million in grants since 2006, according to its website. Past award recipients include the Winfield pool, Ainsworth Fire Department and Highland High School greenhouse.
