RIVERSIDE — The use of an electronic device cause a three-vehicle accident outside of the new Dollar General in Riverside, with one individual taken by ambulance to Iowa City.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office provided the following details.

On the rainy Sunday afternoon, John Downer Jr. was stopped on Highway 22 with a left turn signal activated, waiting to turn into Dollar General.

An unidentified teen boy was driving a Chevy Cruze westbound and took his eyes off the road to check an electronic device.

He rear-ended Downer’s Subaru Baja, causing Downer to spin and strike Jerry Smith’s Ford F-150, who was traveling eastbound on Highway 22.

At 1:47 p.m., the Washington County dispatch received a report of an accident with unknown injuries in Riverside. The accident blocked the westbound lane of Highway 22.

Downer was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital by Washington County Ambulance.

The teen’s and Downer’s vehicles were totaled and towed by Earl’s Towing. Smith was able to drive his vehicle away.

Charges for failure to stop in a cleared and assured distance as well as use of an electronic device will be brought against the teen boy.

The boy’s name was not released because of his age.
