WASHINGTON — The Washington Public Library is continuing its curbside book service and taking appointments to allow patrons use of computers.

Director Bryna Walker sent out a media release that will go into effect for the month of August. The contactless curbside book service will continue all day Monday, Wednesday and Friday, on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Books can be ordered by calling the library at 319-653-2726 or emailing tammy.valentine@washington.lib.ia.us. Books can be browsed and holds can be placed through the online catalog at Washington.lib.ia.us.

Card holders can have two holds per card, two DVDs per card, four books per card for adults 18 and older, 10 books per card for kids. No renewals will be granted. The library will remain locked and patrons under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Monday through Friday, the library will continue to be open by appointment only for 30 minutes. During that time, patrons can browse for books and use the copy and fax machine. Computer appointments will be for one hour with no exceptions or extensions of that time. The library is operating on a capacity of three patrons on a computer and three using other services per appointment time.

“Based on current research from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), curbside pickup of books will continue to be the safest way to check out books. We are quarantining books for four days after they are returned in the drop box based on current suggestions from IMLS,” the statement reads.

The restrooms will remain closed, and staff have taken measures to create social distancing and wear masks. All those with an appointment are asked to wear a mask. Digital resources are available free on the library website and free Wi-Fi will continue to be available outside the facility.
