Salem comes together for RAGBRAI

To the Editor,

THANK YOU! To Everyone from the Town of Salem and the Larger Salem Community who helped make our Meeting Town such a wonderful part of RAGBRAI 2019. To those who: loaned us tractors, cables, 4x4s; to Old Settlers and the Friends Church who had tents, tables -- and lots of good food ready to go; to our musicians and the soundman who made them possible; to all the volunteers. To Martha Pratt for her rhubarb pies.

A special thanks to the Henry Country Sherriff and his officers plus additional recruits who managed the traffic (and crowds) so brilliantly; to Jake Hotchkiss for his help in discouraging unnecessary traffic on Rte 55; to the Salem Volunteer Fire Department for water and monitoring heat exhaustion. And to our financial sponsors: Alliant Energy, Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, and Pilot Grove Savings Bank. We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

Most of all, thank you to Aaron Street Jr., who platted out a town square so long ago in 1839, and to our forebears who planted trees in that square one hundred years later, they provided a welcome refuge to our RAGBRAI visitors. And to our visitors.
