KEOKUK — The No. 9 (4A) Fairfield softball team polished off an undefeated Southeast Conference championship on Monday night, and they did so in style. The Trojans blasted Keokuk 14-0 and 12-4 on the road to finish their conference schedule 10-0, and win the SEC title by a full three games.
The Trojans used a two-hit shutout from Allison Rebling in Game 1. Rebling struck out 14 Chiefs and walked just one to help Fairfield cruise to victory. Rebling also had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Hannah Simpson went 4-for-5 with an RBI. Danielle Breen was 3-for-3. Shaylin Drish finished 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Coty Engel and Peyton McCabe each had two RBIs, and Jenna Norris and Destiny Gridley each knocked in one.
Keokuk didn’t back down in Game 1. Fairfield held just a 3-2 lead after the third innings nd a 4-2 lead after the fourth, but the Trojans added three in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Engel threw a complete game in Game 2 and gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits. She struck out four Chiefs in the win. She also went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Peyton McCabe finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. Drish went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Simpson, Delaney Breen and Destiny Gridley each knocked in a run.
Fairfield is now 18-1 overall, and they’ve won 16 games in a row. Their 10-0 conference record finished three games ahead of both Burlington and Ft. Madison, who tied for second with 7-3 records.
