CORYDON — The Cardinal football team made some highlight-reel plays on Friday night at Wayne County, scoring on three different 65-plus yard plays en route to a 38-14 win, their third-straight to start the season.
The first of those three big plays came in the first quarter. Quarterback Maddux Jones found fellow sophomore Griffin Greiner on a 69-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. That tied the game at 6-6 after an early Wayne County score.
The Falcons bounced back with a long touchdown run and a two-point conversion to take a 14-6 lead late in the first period, but the Comet defense buckled down and didn’t allow another point all game.
Gabe Reyes helped tie the game on a 18-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The two-point conversion made it 14-14.
The Maddux to Greiner combo struck again in the fourth. Greiner caught a 76-yard touchdown pass to put his team up 20-14 before halftime.
Reyes broke out the biggest run play of the day, scoring on a 70-yard run. He’d tack on one more rushing touchdown by the end of the game, and Greiner caught another touchdown pass.
Jones finished the game 8-16 for 249 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Greiner had five catches for 223 yards and three scores, and Reyes ended with 127 yards and three scores of his own.
Brody Adam led the Comets’ defense with 7.5 tackles. Blaine Bryant had two takeaways, an interception and a fumble recovery. Greiner had one interception, and Jarrett Greiner had a fumble recovery.
Cardinal will put their 3-0 record on the line this week when they host North Mahaska.
