BURLINGTON — The rims at Father Minett Gymnasium weren’t kind to the Cardinal Comets on Tuesday night. Both Cardinal basketball teams were cold in their Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division doubleheader at Notre Dame. The Comets fell 74-43 in the boys game, and 74-23 in the girls game.
The Cardinal boys played tough defense in the first quarter and held a 9-6 lead after eight minutes, but the 10th-ranked (1A) Nikes would find their groove in the second period. Notre Dame led 29-17 at halftime and 50-29 after the third quarter. The Nikes would eventually stretch their lead to over 30 points in the fourth.
Elias Elammari led the Comet boys with 13 points int he loss. Ian Liles added 11.
The Cardinal girls had even less luck. The Comets were unable to score in double-digits in any quarter against the 13th-ranked (1A) Nikes.
Notre Dame led 21-5 after the first quarter, 45-14 at halftime and 69-20 after three.
The Cardinal boys are now 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the SEISC South. The girls are 2-8 on the year and 1-8 in conference play.
Cardinal will host Holy Trinity in a girl-boy doubleheader on Friday night.
