KALONA - Iowa Mennonite School closed its boys soccer regular season Monday with a 3-1 win over Washington.
The Demons were playing with “4 RUSS” written on their cleats in honor of Coach Sally Hart’s father, Russell Hayes, who passed away Thursday.
Just a little over the halfway point of the first half, goalie Blake Bontrager sent a long ball forward which cleared the defenders heads. Louis Etienne chased down the ball, going at the goalie one on one, then calmly passing the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
The back line of Kobe Borntrager, Eli Ours, Jorge Canchola and Noah Miller stifled most of Washington’s forays into the offensive third, helping to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, IMS continued to create chances but found it difficult to convert the opportunities it created. With 24 minutes on the clock, John Hughes sent a nice ball across the box where Brian Maren put a shot on goal. The ball was deflected out to Drew Blauvelt, who blasted the ball into the goal from about 20 yards out for the 2-0 lead.
With eight minutes remaining, Maren was able to get another shot on goal, only to see it deflected back into a crowd of players. Etienne pounced on it and rocketed it by the goalie for the 3-0 lead.
As time wound down, Caleb Suchan took a long lofted shot which skimmed underneath the crossbar to make the final score 3-1.
IMS finishes the regular season 9-4 and 6-1 in the SEISC. After the game IMS recognized seniors Jacob Boller, Blake Bontrager, Louis Etienne, and Cody Jones. All played important roles on this year’s team and last year’s team which went to the state tournament.
IMS begins sub-state play Monday facing Grandview Christian at Pella Christian in a 5 p.m. start.
Washington is 2-10 and plays at Keokuk today. Thursday is a home match against Fairfield when the seniors will be recognized.
