IW soccer teams split with Blackburn

MEDIAPOLIS — The SLIAC soccer season has officially started and Iowa Wesleyan kicked off their conference slate on Saturday. In games moved to Mediapolis due to an unplayable field and no lights at East Lake, the men’s team won 6-0 and the women fell 4-1.

Francisco Javier Saldana scored three goals in 10 minutes to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the first half of the men’s game. That performance earned him Player of the Week honors in the SLIAC.

Xavier Lozada had a first half goal in the men’s game as well. Carlos Mateo Moreno and Favio Govea both found the net in the second half.

Jaime Rabadan and Carlos Lopez each dished out two assist sin the victory. Mateo Moreno and Julio Olmedo had one assist apiece.

Trevor Haasis and Elijah Perez each played keeper for 45 minutes in the win. Neither was forced into nay action.

Blackburn held a 1-0 lead at halftime of the women’s game. Ivet Rodriguez sent in the game-tying goal in the 47th minute, but the Beavers tacked on three more scores to run away with the win.

Cheleena Squib made 16 saves in net during the loss. She stopped 80 percent of shots on goal.

The men’s team is now 2-8-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The women are 0-5-1 and 0-1 in the SLIAC. Both teams will travel to Webster University on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
