IW volleyball goes 0-4 at Knox Tournament

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team couldn’t nab a win during their trip to the Knox College tournament this weekend. The Tigers went 0-2 on Friday night and 0-2 on Saturday to finish the tourney winless.

The Tigers were swept in two games on Friday. They fell 25-17, 25-12, 25-21 against the hosting Prairie fire and dropped their match with Central College 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.

Lida Landre led the way with 15 kills on Friday night, nine against Knox and six against Central. Ariel Smale and Paige Kammerer each had 21 assists over the two games, and Jenna Murphy tallied 29 digs on the night.

The Tigers tried to bounce on Saturday, but were stifled in their first game against Concorida, Illinois, falling 25-16, 26-16, 25-19. Landre had six kills in the loss, and Grace Thomas addded five.

The closest match of the weekend was IW’s showdown with Monmouth College. The Tigers bounced back from a set one loss to tie it up at 1-1. Then, down 2-1 in the fourth, IW nearly forced a fifth set but fell by three. Monmouth took it in four sets, 25-15, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22.

Landre had a huge game in the fourth. She had a 16-kill game on just 34 attempts. Breanna Mettler consistantly got the ball down as well, tallying nine kills in 18 attempts. Smale led the team with 19 digs, and Kammerer had 13.

The defense in the four-setter was led by the digging efforts of Murphy and Smale. Murphy led the team with 27 digs and Smale finished with 20.

IW fell to 3-7 overall. They’ll begin conference play at home on Saturday, July 21, when they hsot Eureka College and MacMurray College for a quadrangular.
