MARSHALLTOWN — Fairfield swimmer Willow Larsen didn’t do quite enough to make the 100-Yard Backstroke finals in this weekend’s girls state swimming and diving meet, but she did bring home a Top-25 finish.

The Trojan freshman finished her preliminary race in just over one-minute on Friday, getting to the wall at 1:00.71, a time that beat 25th-place Liz Purtle of Boone by eight one-hundredths of a second.

Larsen ran a sub-30 second opening lap. When she hit the halfway point, there were 29.40 seconds on the clock. Her second lap lasted 31.35 seconds.

Larsen’s final placement was just eight spots away from qualification. The Top-16 swimmers in Friday’s preliminaries went on to Saturday’s finals.

The state championship went to Iowa City West junior Scarlet Martin. Martin was the top qualifier with the time of 54.17 seconds, and swam a 53-14 second final, winning the race by over one second.

Larsen was Fairfield’s lone representative at the state meet. She qualified on the last possible day, swimming a 59.88 second race at last week’s regional qualifying meet.

“Willow swims year-round to perfect her individual races,” Trojan head coach Brittany Winslow said. “Swim is an underrated sport that takes a lot of hard work and effort if you want to make large gains.”

Coach Winslow also commented on the value of having Larsen’s skill on the team throughout the 2020 season.

“She has been a great asset to the team,” Winslow said. “She brings advice and skill to practices that we have never had before.”
