KALONA — Even though it was an absolutely gorgeous day weather-wise for a cross-country meet, the course at Hillcrest academy had some squishy spots that were waterlogged.

While it may have made the times slower, it also made for fun, at least for some.

“As a team, we have discussed muddy courses a lot and I think it is more entertaining than just good old plain ground,” Washington’s Lance Sobaski said. Sobaski finished 12th behind teammate Evan Horak’s No. 7 placing and the Demons finished 31 points ahead of Fairfield, which won a tie for second at Washington’s home meet.

“The mud takes your mind off running while still keeping focused on your pace,” Horak said. “It becomes kind of a game.”

Mid-Prairie’s Marie Hostetler led her team to a win over rival Williamsburg. The teams are ranked first and second, respectively, in Class 2A.

“We always want to beat Williamsburg,” Hostetler said. “We were missing one of our runners, so it was really a test for us. I think our runners really stepped up and ran well. I saw some real strong finishes from my teammates.”

Mt. Pleasant’s Abby Ryon placed second, 1 minute, 17 seconds behind Hostetler.

Ryon was running close to Hostetler to start the race, but “That didn’t last very long,” Ryon said. “My goal wasn’t so much to stay with her, I just wanted to keep the gap consistent. I wanted the gap to be a minute and not a minute and a half. I was trying to find that balance with my internal pacing but it’s hard when you can’t see the leader.”

Leah Bontrager led the home team, placing 31st with a personal best time for the course.

“It was good to run on my home course because I know everywhere, the turns, the bad spots and all because we practice on it,” Bontrager said. “It wasn’t my best time this season but I got a PR for this course.”

Mid-Prairie’s boys were missing a runner, but still placed fourth among the 13 teams.

“The boys looked a little tired, but they pushed through it,” Mid-Prairie coach Mark Hostetler said. “We have been working hard so I was happy with how they finished. I thought the girls ran smarter than they did the last meet. They did a better job of running an even pace. Ana Fleming and Abigail Evans both ran well. There are a lot of things that affect how they run like whether they slept enough, or if they are eating or what they are eating.”
