MT. PLEASANT — All of the Union Area’s Panthers were present for Mt. Pleasant’s home tournament on Saturday, but a stacked field led to a disappointing day for both teams. Mt. Pleasant went 1-3 on the day and Pekin went 0-4.
Mt. Pleasant’s only win of the day was against Pekin, dropping the visiting Panthers 25-15 and 25-17. They were unable to win a set over any of the SEISC South Division teams, getting swept by 1A No. 8 Holy Trinity, Central Lee and Notre Dame.
The hosts played well early against HTC but eventually fell 25-22 in the first set and 25-17 in the second. Central Lee knocked off Mt. Pleasant 25-16, 25-15. Notre Dame beat Mt. Pleasant 25-8, 25-28.
Mt. Pleasant head coach David Streeter said his team didn’t play up to its potential, but gave credit to a stacked field.
“It’s always a good tournament when you’ve got teams like that,” Streeter said. “They’re normally good, and this year they’re just all up there. It’s nice to kind of see where we’re at, but unfortunately, we didn’t show up today.”
Pekin started its day against Central Lee, falling 25-11, 25-19. They fell to 0-2 after being swept by Mt. Pleasant.
Pekin played Notre Dame in their third match, falling 25-21, 25-9. Holy Trinity kept them winless with a 25-8, 25-22 sweep.
The Nikes ended up winning the tournament, going 4-0 on the day. They had to grind out a 23-25, 25-21, 15-13 win over HTC and an 18-25, 25-14, 15-10 win over Central Lee to pull it out.
HTC took second in the tournament by sweeping Central Lee 25-11, 25-23. Central Lee placed third at 2-2.
Mt. Pleasant will play day two of the Southeast Conference tournament tonight (Tuesday) in Keokuk. They will take on both Fairfield and Keokuk to finish out pool play. Also today, Pekin will play an SEISC North Division game at Wapello.
