MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team came up just one point short in their home-opener against Keokuk on Thursday night. The Panthers came up just one point short of victory, falling 40-39.

The Panthers won the first four matches of the night, three by forfeit and one by pin. Carson Coleman pinned Keokuk’s Hunter Haage in 2:56 at 132 lbs., and that was the highlight of 24 straight points.

Keokuk came right back with 34 points of their own, winning five-straight matches from 145 lbs. to 195 lbs. The Chiefs had three pins and a major decision over that time period, and Keouk led 38-24 with just four more weights to go.

In the 220 lbs. match, Samuel Carrasco had perhaps the biggest win of the night, pinning Tristyn O’Connor who had been off to a red-hot start. He planted O’Connor in 1:27 to give the Panthers a little momentum back.

“Sam’s kid was a real tough kid,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. “He was undefeated coming into tonight, 7-0. Sam went out there and wrestled his match and got the ‘W.’ That’s great for his confidence coming into the weekend.”

After Keokuk won the 285 lbs. match by forfeit, Abby Blint won the 106 lbs. forfeit at 113 lbs. That put the Panthers down four, at 40-36, with one match to go.

Corbin Broeker stepped to the mat and won a thriller over Keokuk’s Tate O’Shea. Broeker beat O’Shea with a takedown in the final seconds, but the three points weren’t enough to steal back the win.

“Tonight’s home dual was a lot of guys’ first time ever on an MP mat,” Coach Blint said, eluding to a number of new faces on the varsity team this year. “No matter if they are a freshman or a sophomore. It’s the first time they’ve been out here in front of the lights and the crowd and everything. The score didn’t come out right, but a lot of good stuff out of the young kids here.”
