Pekin, Cardinal wrestle at North Mahaska

NORTH MAHASKA — Both Pekin and Cardinal traveled to North Mahaska on Saturday for an invitational tournament. Pekin took fifth place overall, Cardinal finished in ninth.

Pekin scored 115.5 points on the day. The Panthers had two champions; Michael Jones, at 138 pounds, and Mason Juhl, at 182 pounds.

Jones rolled through the 138-pound bracket. He defeated Brad Matthews of Baxter on an 18-2 technical fall, pinned Lynville-Sully’s Brodey Johnson in 1:21, and finished the day by taking down North Mahaska’s Michael DeJong, in 2:29.

Juhl had just two matches on the day to win the 182-pound bracket. He defeated pinned Cardinal’s Bradan Ballard, in 56 seconds, and followed that up by defeating Cardinal’s Brock Lewman, in 41 seconds.

Pekin also had three second-place finishers. Bailey Frescoln was second in the 145-pound bracket. Cael Baker took second at 152 pounds, and Blake Juhl was second at 170 pounds.

Cardinal had two second-place finishers. Lewman took second in the 182-pound bracket, and Donovan Babcock was second at 195 pounds.

Fairfield’s junior varsity team was also present at the meet. The Trojan JV team finished 11th place, with 27 points.

The Trojans had just one Top-3 finish. Ben Sirdoreus finished third in the 126-pound bracket.
