MEDIAPOLIS — Pekin and New London played a thriller at Mediapolis High School on Thursday night. The Panthers survived a late Tiger rush and pulled away late for a 59-49 win.
A back-and-forth first quarter ended with a 12-12 tie. Pekin led 35-26 at halftime.
The Panthers held a 46-34 lead in the final minute of the third quarter. New London scored to cut the lead to 46-38 at the end of three, and battled all the way back to within one point, trailing 46-45 with less than three minutes to go.
Brayden Soboski and Brady Millikin each hit a 3-pointer in the closing minutes to help Pekin withstand New London’s final rush.
Millikin went 11-for-14 from the free throw line to lead Pekin with 16 points. Soboski had 17. Brock Long scored 11. Dayne Eckley had six. Kennan Winn scored five, and Cael Long had four.
Blaise Porter had 20 points to lead New London. Grant Swanson scored 19. Kade Benjamin had six, and Devon Swanson had four. The Tigers were 0-for-13 from beyond the 3-point line.
Pekin will take on Springville on Saturday at Iowa City West High School. with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
