There was a lot of upheaval in Class 3A this past week as the top three voted teams in that class all experienced a loss and the poll of Associated Press voters showed it. The AP released the boys basketball poll Monday and four different teams received votes for No. 1 after previously top-ranked Pella lost.

For all the upheaval in 2A, voters were sure of their top teams with only two other teams receiving votes. Clear Creek-Amana was the recipient of 12 points and LeMars one. The other classes saw at least five other teams (4A) outside the Top 10 garner votes with 2A at nine and 1A six.

Boyden-Hull in Class 2A was the only unanimous No. 1. Class 1A’s North Linn was unanimous last week but lost a vote to Lake Mills this week.

Class 2A saw Pekin enter the Top 10 last week and it moved up a spot to No. 9 this week after defeating Wapello, which had dealt the Panthers their only loss of the season.

Pekin is the only Southeast Iowa Super Conference team ranked, although two others did get votes. West Burlington in 2A had two points and Notre Dame in 1A had one.

Monticello of the River Valley Conference was the recipient of the chaos in 3A, moving up to third with two first-place votes.

RVC member West Branch has not played a game since it beat Mid-Prairie 44-41, but it is undefeated and ranked fifth, tied with Dike-New Hartford, which fell from the No. 2 spot after a loss to Wapsie Valley. Wapsie Valley was last year’s 1A state champion, beating Montezuma in the semifinals.

Montezuma of the South Iowa Cedar League improved from eighth to seventh in Class 1A. Previously-ranked as high as seventh, league member Keota, which has one loss and that was at Montezuma, had one vote.

Pekin has the Class 2A leader in blocked shots in Brayden Sobaski, although Caden Kirkman of Wilton also has 47. Brady Millikin’s 79 assists to fellow Panthers is the seventh best total in Class 2A, but his per game average of 5.6 is fifth. Brock Long’s 41 steals are also seventh and he is 17th in the class with 244 points.

As a team, the Panthers are third in blocked shots with 69 and fourth in assists with 241. Chandler Stull, Long and Sobaski all have more than 30 assists apiece. The Panthers are tied for sixth in offensive rebounds with Cael Lyle the team leader in the stat. The Panthers are 11th in total rebounds, 22nd in defensive boards and Sobaski leads the team in those two categories.

Pekin’s 156 steals are sixth in the class as Sobaski has 35 and Millikin 28.
