It is never too early if it is labeled preseason, although the girls basketball season did get underway Friday.

The Iowa Girls High school Athletic Union released its preseason version of the rankings for the 2020-21 basketball season before any games were played.

Riding the feeling of being state tournament champions in volleyball, girls basketball at Notre Dame is ranked at No. 14 in Class 1A. The Nikes, who lost in a regional final, are the only Super Conference team ranked. Defending champion Newell-Fonda is ranked first.

The South Iowa Cedar League has two teams in 1A with Montezuma at No. 8 and Lynville-Sully No. 9. Montezuma reached state last season but lost in the first round.

River Valley Conference member West Branch sits atop the 2A rankings with fellow league team Cascade at No. 13.

Last year, West Branch stopped Van Buren County’s quest to get to state with a regional final win. Then it lost in the first round at state to Osage, which finished second to North Linn. North Linn is slotted at No. 5.

RVC’s West Liberty is No. 2 in 3A while defending champ Sioux City Bishop Heelan is 13th.

Southeast Conference member Keokuk is barely in, sitting at No. 15 in 4A. Defending champion North Scott is sixth and Glenwood, a 2019 semifinal loser is first.

No. 3 Johnston is the reigning 5A champion, winning the title game over No. 4 Waukee. Waterloo West is ranked No. 1. It lost to Waukee in a state semifinal and No. 2 Southeast Polk lost to Johnston in the quarterfinals.
