Tigers lead area teams at ND tournament

BURLINGTON — The New London volleyball team took third in the Notre Dame tournament this weekend. The Tigers beat Pekin in the third-place game after both squads finished second in their respective schools. Hillcrest Academy was also in action but was eliminated in pool play.

New London and Hillcrest both played in “Pool 2,” and faced off with each other in the first games of the day. New London took the game 21-8 and 21-12, led by a six-kill performance by Addie Pry. Sofie Reighard and Keaura Williams each had five kills in the win for New London. Hillcrest was led by Mia Graber, who had three.

The Tigers gave Class 3A No. 6 Davenport Assumption all they could handle in their second game. Assumption escaped New London 21-14, 21-23, 15-8 in what would end up being the pool championship. Reighard had seven kills in the loss.

New London beat rival Danville 21-17, 21-17 in their third game, getting seven kills from Pry in the win. That gave the Tigers the second spot in the pool and a berth in the third place game.

Hillcrest fell 21-19, 21-11 against Danville, led by a two-kill game from Graber. They dropped their game against Assumption 21-7 and 21-9. Graber had three kills in that one.

Pekin grinded out a 13-21, 21-12, 15-7 win over Louisa-Muscatine to start the day 1-1. The Panthers raced past Keokuk 21-17, 21-17 to move to 2-0. That set up a showdown with Notre Dame for the top spot in “Pool 1.”

The Nikes were able to pull it out in the Pool 1 championship, taking a three-set game 21-9, 16-21, 15-5 to punch their ticket to the championship.

New London swept the consolation match over Pekin, winning 25-21, 25-8. Williams had seven kills in the win, and Aliyah Christensen dished out 21 assists.

In the championship match, Assumption won an all-Catholic school battle, beating Notre Dame 25-20, 25-13 for an undefeated tournament title.

All three teams will be in action tonight (Tuesday). New London plays at Danville, Pekin goes to Columbus, and Hillcrest has their home opener against Louisa-Muscatine.
