In other Union Area volleyball action, a trio of area teams moved on to the next round. Columbus, No. 11 (1A) New London and WACO all advanced to the regional semifinals on Monday.
The Wildcats had to battle in a true road game at Durant, winning a battle of Wildcats in four sets in the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinals. Columbus knocked out Durant 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, 25-11.
The win earned Columbus (12-13) the opportunity to play against the second-ranked team in Class 2A. The Wildcats will take on Wilton (30-3), a team that vanquished Louisa-Muscatine in three sets. That game will be played at Durant.
New London made quick work of Moravia in the Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinals. The Tigers won all three sites in dominating fashion, taking games 25-8, 25-11 and 25-15.
New London (20-7) will face off with Melcher-Dallas (23-2) at a site to be determined later. Melcher-Dallas won a five-set thriller at Lamoni, taking the deciding set 16-14.
In the Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal, WACO moved on while Highland was moved out. The Warriors dominated North Mahaska 25-14, 25-17, 25-17. Highland fell to No. 8 Holy Trinity 25-15, 25-11, 25-4.
WACO (25-7) will travel to No. 10 Lisbon (26-4) for their semifinal. In the other semifinal of that region, HTC will host No. 14 Notre Dame, the same team that knocked out Winfield-Mt. Union on Wednesday.
Highland ended its season at 7-17.
