Mid-Prairie FFA looks back on year of highlights

In February 2024, Sub-District Career Development Events were held in Oskaloosa with seventeen members participating. Members communicated with Mr. Foster’s middle school classes throughout the year to present information to the Ag Life Science classes. A faculty breakfast was held in appreciation of everything teachers do for members. The annual FFA Week Assembly was held. Eight members of the Mid-Prairie FFA chapter attended the Legislative Symposium. Members attended the Johnson County Cattlemen’s Banquet and the Washington/Keokuk County Corn & Soybean Growers and the Washington County Cattlemen Banquet.
In March, Mid-Prairie FFA members also attended the District CDE’s with the Parliamentary Procedures Team, Team Welding, Extemporaneous Speaking, Job Interview, Secretary’s Book and Reporter’s Scrapbook competing. The Secretary’s Book advanced to state. The Food for America program was presented to all third-grader Mid-Prairie Elementary School students. Members had a Drive-A-Tractor-to-School Day.
In April, the 20 members of the FFA chapter traveled to Iowa State University in Ames for the State FFA Convention. The Secretary’s Book received a silver rating. Five members of the chapter received their Iowa FFA Degrees. The greenhand quiz team received a silver and the Ag Sales team received a gold. The Biotechnology team received 7th place gold. The Poultry Judging team received as bronze. Two members presented papers at the Iowa Youth Institute.
In May, the Annual FFA Banquet was held honoring FFA members. Twenty-four members put on an Ag Day for all Mid-Prairie 2nd graders. Members picked up trash along Highway 22 as a part of the Adopt-a-Highway program. Buckle Up or Eat Glass seat belt check was held at the High School. Members assisted in working with flags at the Kalona and Wellman Cemeteries. Members planted flowers at the University of Iowa.
In June, members assisted during the West Chester Cleanup Day. Charlotte Sieren won the SE District Livestock Judging Contest. Members worked with the Washington/Keokuk Iowa Corn group to help with tractor pulls.
In July, members participated in the Wellman Fourth of July parade. Many members showed livestock at the Washington and Johnson Co. Fairs. The chapter hosted a cookout and kickball for all FFA members. Members attended a flower exhibiting workshop held at the University of Iowa.
August found eighteen members of the MP chapter showed or assisted at the State Fair. Four members served as Iowa State Fair Grandstand Ushers. The school year began with the Annual Ice Cream Social at the beginning of school. Four members participated in the State Livestock Judging contest and received a gold rating.
In September the chapter once again collected trash along our Adopt-a-Highway roadway. Members also cleaned up trash after all home football games. Members organized a pull tab drive for the Ronald McDonald House. Twenty-four members attended the ISU Extension Ag Discovery Day. The Mid-Prairie FFA had a float in the Mid-Prairie Homecoming Parade. Ten members assisted with the Washington County Farm Safety Day Camp presenting about Grain Safety. Members finished up the planting of over 100 trees to replace trees lost from the area tornado. Members presented to the school board about the summer activities of the FFA chapter.
October was spent with 12 members participating in the NW FFA Sub-District Freshman/Sophomore Livestock judging contest. Nine members of the MP chapter attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. Members went to the elementary schools to present information about agriculture.
In November, nine Mid-Prairie FFA members participated in the District Greenhand Fire-up. Fifteen members participated in the Ignite, Amplify and Transform Leadership Conferences at the FFA Enrichment Center.
December brought the fruit and cheese sales to an end and the Christmas Party. FFA members sponsored Christmas events for seminars. Members partnered with Feed the Kids and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation to prepare Christmas meals for food insecure families in the school district.
January 2025 was spent preparing for contests at the Sub-District and District levels. Nine members completed their Iowa FFA Degree applications. Six members participated in the Legislative Symposium by meeting with our senator and representatives.
